Destination of the Month

GILI ISLANDS

ABOUT GILI ISLANDS

Arcing away from the northwest corner of Lombok, the Gili Islands are three idyllic atolls where the sand is still powdery white, the water a clear sparkling turquoise, and the sunsets over Bali’s Agung in the west simply spectacular.

Home to the largest Irish bar on the smallest island in the world, an authentic Japanese sushi restaurant, a turtle hatchery, ominous sounding dive sites like ‘Shark Point’ and miles and miles of white sandy beaches, Lombok’s Trawangan, or Gili T for short, makes a surprisingly ideal getaway destination. Getting there is easy and whichever way you chose, you will be guaranteed to see some of Bali and Lombok’s breathtaking scenery.

No motorised transport

Fortunately all three Gili Islands will not permit any type of motorised transport on them and therefore rely on bicycles or horse and carts, locally known as ‘Cidomos’. Bicycles can be rented from any of the kiosks and cost from around Rp10,000 an hour, or better value, ask for the daily rate. Cidomos are easily located all over the islands but tend to hang around the harbour and busy spots, arrangements can be made if you are staying in a more remote place on the island, for instance a late ride home…. Haggling is the norm, and always agree a price before your journey.

Families

Although originally discovered by backpackers in the mid eighties, and a reputation as a party destination, Gili Trawangan now boasts itself as a great destination suitable for families of all ages. Various new hotels and boutique bungalows now cater for children and offer good discounts, some have baby sitting services, and with lots of activities on the islands families are sure to enjoy their holidays to the full.

Swimming and Snorkeling

The best place for snorkeling and swimming is along the main beach area a few hundred meters from where the boats pull in, this area is known as Goodheart. Masks, fins and snorkels can be rented by the hour or day, from any of the dive shops or the kiosks in the street. Glass bottom boat trips around the three islands are available and cost around 50,000rp per person. You can see all types of marine life just by snorkeling including the turtles, but please be careful not to touch the coral.

Note; Please do not try to swim between the islands as the currents in the channel can be unpredictable and very strong.

Money matters

There is no ATM machine on the Gili Islands and currently no plan for one, all the dive shops and bigger hotels accept Visa and MasterCard credit cards, cash advances at 10% are available in many places most of the time but all relies on a rather shaky phone connection. Money changers will cash traveler’s checks and currency but at a lower reduced rate than on the mainland.

Electricity

All three Gilis now have their own PLN electric generating stations and have power 24 hours a day, however in the peak seasons this can be put under strain particularly late afternoon and early evening. A number of businesses have their own generators such as the larger hotels and restaurants so as to avoid the problem, and usually power cuts or ‘mati lampu’ only last a few hours.

Communication

There are a number of internet cafes on Gili Trawangan all charging approximately the same, (around Rp200 per minute) although all operate at different speeds. For telephone calls the best place to use is the Wartel, located next to the art market.

Crime, safety and health

Generally there is very little crime on the islands, however no where is 100% free. As with any where in the world you travel its best to leave your valuables in your room, and ideally in your hotel safe. If you do have any problems on the island report them to the Head of the Island (Kepala Desa) at the Satgas office, located opposite the Harbour. There are two small basic clinics on Gili Trawangan that can deal with minor problems, located in the village and at Villa Ombak.

The Wallace line

Alfred Russel Wallace, the so-called father of animal geography, formulated his ideas on evolution by natural selection while observing and collecting wildlife in the islands of Southeast Asia. He was particularly impressed by the sudden difference in bird families he encountered when he sailed some twenty miles east of the island of Bali and landed on Lombok. On Bali the birds were clearly related to those of the larger islands of Java and Sumatra and mainland Malaysia. On Lombok the birds were clearly related to those of New Guinea and Australia. He marked the channel between Bali and Lombok as the divide between two great zoogeographic regions, the Oriental and Australian. In his honor this dividing line, which extends northward between Borneo and Sulawesi, is still referred to today as Wallace's Line. The very first island of the Australian region is Gili Trawangan.

Instrument Classification

Instrument classification categorizes instruments according to their function. Their classification acts as a reference when such instruments are selected, purchased, tested, and used because each may have different criteria. Such a classification typically covers the identification of critical (as they relate to safety, health, and the environment) and non-critical equipment. The classification may also consider the results due to loss of performance and loss of the instrument's required accuracy. Sometimes such a classification resides in a plant's quality assurance manual. It all depends on the way a plant does business and runs its operation. In this chapter, and as an example, instruments are divided into four classes. Plant management and maintenance personnel may decide that a different classification of instruments is required.

Class 1 Instruments

Class 1 instruments are the plant calibration standards. These types of instruments are used to calibrate Class 2 instruments and are generally traceable to an outside, nationally recognized standards or calibration organization. These instruments are kept in the maintenance shop in an environmentally controlled area that meets the manufacturer's specifications. Class 1 instruments are calibrated annually by an independent calibration lab. After each calibration, they are returned to the plant with a certificate approved by the calibration lab. They are typically sent and received back within 30 days of the anniversary due date. The anniversary date of these instruments is staggered to ensure the presence of a working and calibrated set in the maintenance shop at all times.
In the event that a Class 1 instrument is found out of tolerance, the calibration lab should immediately advise the plant. The maintenance supervisor at the plant will then assess the effect this out of tolerance may have had on Types 2, 3, and 4 instruments.
When the calibration equipment is received back, it is checked for obvious shipping damage. If there is damage, the equipment must not be used and must be immediately returned to the calibration lab for repair and recalibration.

Class 2 Instruments

Class 2 instruments are the plant instrument calibration standards. These instruments are used by maintenance personnel to calibrate Class 3 and 4 instruments. Class 2 instruments are calibrated semi-annually by plant maintenance using Class 1 instruments. In addition to the scheduled semi-annual check, calibration may be performed whenever the accuracy of a Class 2 instrument is questionable.  Calibration forms must be completed for each Class 2 instrument every time a calibration is performed. These forms are then signed by and filed with the supervisor of plant maintenance.

Class 3 Instruments

Class 3 instruments are critical process instruments that prevent situations that are either threatening to safety, health, or the environment or that have been defined as critical to plant operation or to product quality. The calibration frequency of Class 3 instruments is based on their required reliability—for critical trips, it is defined by the calculated Trip Testing frequency (T) (see chapter 10). Class 3 instruments may also require calibration when the instrument is replaced or when its accuracy is questioned (e.g., when its reading is compared with other indicators).
Calibration sheets are completed for each instrument every time a calibration is performed.
These sheets are then signed by and filed with the supervisor of plant maintenance.

Class 4 Instruments

Class 4 instruments are used for production and represent the majority of the instrumentation and control equipment in a plant.  Calibration of Class 4 instruments is done when required, when an instrument is replaced, or when the instrument's accuracy is questioned (e.g., when its reading is compared with other indicators). After a certain time in service, the records are checked to determine if this approach is adequate. Calibration sheets are completed for each instrument every time a calibration is performed, and these sheets are then signed by and filed with the supervisor of plant maintenance.

Root account in Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron

Understanding on account in ubuntu will help us when we want to modify our ubuntu system or when we want to install an application or computer drivers which have special privileges.

First time when we installing an ubuntu 8.04 Operating System to our computer or laptop, we will be asked to enter an account username and password. The username and password that has been created then will be used to enter to the ubuntu system, change or update some system files, to add/remove program, etc. But we must understand that the account we have created when installing ubuntu actually not have a full privileges (based on my experience). So some action or syntact (in terminal window) we can't do when using that account. For full privileges we must login as root.

This is my example case. Please refer to my other post : "Wifi activation on Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron". In the step number 6, the syntact ndiswrapper -m and ndiswrapper -ma must typed using root login. It's mean we can't execute those syntact using the account which we have created when installing ubuntu.

How we login as root ???

May be the way to login as root that I publish is not the only one, if there is another simple way please notify ....

OK let start to login as root in our ubuntu operating system.

1. Reboot your computer/laptop

2. Go to booting menu in ubuntu system

To go to booting menu, type Esc key when booting in progress. As comparison in windows operating system usually we use F8 key to go to the booting menu.

Booting menu in standart ubuntu 8.04 system consist of these lists:
*. Ubuntu 8.04, kernel 2.6.24-16-generic
*. Ubuntu 8.04, kernel 2.6.24-16-generic (recovery mode)
*. Ubuntu 8.04, memtest86+
*. Other Operating System:
*. (The other operating system will be listed here when we use more than 1 operating system)

Please select to Ubuntu 8.04, kernel 2.6.24-16-generic (recovery mode) and then press enter. Then we will go to recovery menu.

3. Recovery menu

The recovery menu consist of these list:
*. resume
*. root
*. xfix

Select to root and then we will go to a command line as root (at the bottom of window).

We have done login as root. Now we can type all syntact that need root login. Refer to my example case, the syntact ndiswrapper -m and ndiswrapper -ma now will successfully executed.

To leave the command line, just type exit and then choose resume ...... now we will go to the ubuntu system like usual.
